|SCRIPTURE: “Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching, she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds”. |
(Rev. 2:20-23 NIV)
Jezebel, a pagan queen of Israel, was considered the evilest woman who ever lived. Her teaching misled many servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. Why is sexual immorality serious? Sex outside marriage always hurts. It hurts God because it shows that we prefer to satisfy our desire our own way instead of according to God’s Word. Sexual immorality has tremendous power to destroy families, churches, and communities because it destroys the integrity on which these relationships are built. Eating food offered to idols could violate the conscience of weaker Christian brothers and sisters who would be bothered about it. Jezebel was obviously more concerned about her own selfish pleasure and freedom than the needs and concerns of fellow believers.
“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” – Hebrews 4: 12 (NLT)
