Our Mission Determines Our Ministry!

SCRIPTURE: “When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed  and helpless, like  sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36 NIV)

Our ministry is a ministry of mercy because that is the ministry of Jesus. We are not sent on a ministry of condemnation. That was the “ministry” of the Pharisees. Our ministry is determined by our mission. Our mission is to love and follow Jesus; thus, our ministry is to have compassion on people. The disciples could not see their ministry clearly yet because their mission was not exactly the same as Jesus. They had plans for more than just following Jesus. They also had plans for building a part of their Kingdom.
Most Christians think only a few are ready to be harvested for God and live in an atmosphere that seems to indicate that few have any interest in seriously following Jesus. Yet Jesus sees that the problem is not that multitudes do not want to be saved, but that the followers of Jesus do not have the same mission as He does.

Ministry Beyond The Storm!

SCRIPTURE: “They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet Him.” (Mark 5:2 NIV)

Jesus knew what was on the other side of the storm. He knew that an entire town would “see no beauty in Him that they should desire Him” (Mark 5:17) Still His compassion was moved even toward those that rejected Him, and the disciples must understand this example. If we refuse to learn our lesson in the storms, then we will never have a ministry beyond the storm. It is important that the disciples see the Lord’s compassion and power in salvation, even for those who are bound  by Satan. The day will come when they will face the same devil, not in the cemetery and tombs, but in the temple and places of worship. If Jesus did not send the early church through a storm to shatter their plans to preach the gospel to the Jews only, then the rest of the world would have never known the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

Education Through The Storm!

SCRIPTURE: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be matured and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4 NIV)

Our purpose is not just to get through the storm, but to learn what Jesus is teaching us in the storm.
We must not simply want relief from the trial, we should desire revelation about God, ourselves, and the ministry God has for us on the other side of the storm. Remember, Jesus is the perfect Teacher, and we should be conscious that from the time that we committed to be with Jesus and to build His Kingdom, He is teaching us through His Word, and bringing people, places, and events into our lives to apply that Word taught. The disciples had asked two questions of Jesus in the storm, “Lord, don’t you care?’ and ‘Lord, are you able?” Both of these questions should have been settled on the land in the light before the storm in the night on the troubled sea. Jesus had already proved himself in everything He did and said, “Yes, I care,” and Yes I am able”
The disciples should have had these truths so deep in their souls that they would have been anchors in the storm. We, too, must have these truths as deep convictions of our lives before the storm.

Jesus Expects Us To Love Him In Storms!

SCRIPTURE: “He said to His disciples, Why are you so afraid?. Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40 NIV)

What Jesus expected of His disciples is the same thing that God expected of Israel in the wilderness. What did God expect of Israel in the wilderness? To love and trust Him in a walk of faith.  We have a description of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and God’s leadership of them in the wilderness. As believers, we do not have to fear following Jesus. You will note that each place that God led Israel by the glory cloud, He expected one thing of them: Will you trust Me? Will you believe me? Each time He tested their faith, they murmured and complained. Do you really feel that it was realistic for Jesus to expect the disciples to react differently in the storm? Most of us would agree that their reaction to the circumstances they faced that night was quite natural. Jesus expected them to trust Him in the storm. Throughout Scripture, we find that God expects us to love and trust Him. Our growth and enlargement proceeds from our trust and obedience to God.

Jesus Reveals Himself To Us In The Storms!

SCRIPTURE: “The men were amazed and asked, what kind of Man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey Him.” (Matthew 8:27 NIV)

We have already seen that from the beginning, Jesus called the disciples “to be with Him and to send them” Part of being with Him was to progressively see Him revealed. According to (John2:11) the first of His miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee, He revealed His glory, and the disciples put their faith in Him.

At this point in time, the disciples had many misconceptions about the Messiah and God’s program. As each day passed, they saw His works, Heard His words, and better understood who He was. Now up to the point of the first storm, they have seen His power over disease, demons, and even death, yet they marvel at His command of wind and nature. When Jesus arose and commanded the storm, they began to see more clearly how great this One was that sailed with them.

Jesus Was Manifested In The Storm!

SCRIPTURE: “Without warning a furious storm came up on the lake so that the waves swept over  the boat But  Jesus was sleeping.” (Matthew 8:24 NIV)

“But Jesus was sleeping;”  this is an amazing statement in the light of the fact that Jesus knew all things and was certainly aware that the storm would strike while He was sleeping. Could we sleep if we knew a storm would strike? Certainly No! Who sleeps in a storm? Perhaps the ignorant could sleep, but Jesus knew. Maybe those who were indifferent could sleep, but Jesus cares.
When Jesus slept in the midst of the storm, it was an example of Son’s perfect trust and confidence in the Father.  He manifested the example of rest to His disciples to teach them that just as He watched and trusted the Father, they were to watch and trust Him.
Jesus did not sleep the sleep of indifference. No, He cared more for the disciples than they did for themselves. We often encounter storms in our life, where we feel God can’t or won’t work. When we truly understand who God is, however, we will realize that He controls both the storms of nature and the storms of the troubled heart. Jesus’ power that calmed this storm can also help us deal with the problems we face.

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” – Hebrews 4 : 12 (NLT)

Manifestation In The Storm!

SCRIPTURE: “He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40 NIV)

The disciples lived with Jesus, but they underestimated Him. They did not see that His power applied to their very own situation. Jesus sits as a refiner and purifier of our lives. Each storm is like God has just turned up the heat and some new hidden impurity or selfish motives come to the surface. When we see the impurity from God’s point of view, we should confess and forsake that thing in our life by giving it to Him. When the storm hit, Jesus sat as a refiner and purifier of silver to His disciples. Jesus wanted what came to the surface to be exposed to His followers,  that they might give it up to Him.
Whatever comes to the surface and is manifested, we need to let Jesus scoop it away until what people see in our storms is not us but Jesus.

Foundation For The Storm!

SCRIPTURE: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NIV)

As believers, we must prepare and be equipped for when life gets tough because life will get tough. Stormy seasons of life are inevitable. For the followers of Jesus who are living for comfort and riches, the storm only exposes these vanities. What the world may see as setbacks and losses are only the reestablishing and rearrangement of our lives to the will of God so that we might see better investment in eternal values. The greater we understand God and His ways, the greater potential of faith we have. It is important to study the scriptures and build a strong doctrinal base for our faith. Let study the Scriptures now, then when the storms of life hit, we will not be spending all our time discovering what God is like.

Preparing For The Storm

SCRIPTURE: “Then He got into the boat and His disciples followed  Him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re  going to drown! “(Matthew 8:23-25 NIV)

The disciples were well prepared for this first storm. God is always preparing us today for tomorrow’s storm. How do we know the disciples were prepared? From the moment Jesus called them, He had been preparing them in the day on land for this first storm in the night on the troubled sea. Every word Jesus said, every place He led, every person He ministered to, and every demonstration of His character, were all in preparation for the first storm. If they had heard and considered all that went on before that dark night, they would have been well prepared for the storm. God is preparing us today, on land in the light, for what we need in the storm in the night on the troubled sea. Therefore, we must pay attention to the teaching, preaching, events, circumstances, and other things that God is bringing into our lives.

Growing Through The Storms Of Life

SCRIPTURE: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” ( John 16:33 NIV)

Storms are not stones, nor are evil-sent. They are bread from the Father to be received with thanksgiving for our good. Even when Satan stirs up the wind, as in the case of Job, God will still have His way in the whirlwind and the storm.

It is God’s design that we experience maturing love in our walk with Him. The storms of life that Jesus leads us into will help reveal some areas of our life that are not under the Holy Spirit’s control; thank God we will also see Jesus manifested in the storms, giving us a greater view of God and God’s purpose for our lives. To be able to get through the storms of life, a Christian must say with full assurance, as (Nahum 1:3), “The Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet”
