SCRIPTURE: “When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36 NIV) Our ministry is a ministry of mercy because that is the ministry of Jesus. We are not sent on a ministry of condemnation. That was the “ministry” of the Pharisees. Our ministry is determined by our mission. Our mission is to love and follow Jesus; thus, our ministry is to have compassion on people. The disciples could not see their ministry clearly yet because their mission was not exactly the same as Jesus. They had plans for more than just following Jesus. They also had plans for building a part of their Kingdom. Most Christians think only a few are ready to be harvested for God and live in an atmosphere that seems to indicate that few have any interest in seriously following Jesus. Yet Jesus sees that the problem is not that multitudes do not want to be saved, but that the followers of Jesus do not have the same mission as He does.
