Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. –
Romans 14:19
Introduction
As Ghana approaches its general elections this week, the atmosphere is charged with
anticipation and passion. Elections are not only a cornerstone of democracy but also an
opportunity for citizens to exercise their God-given right to choose leaders who will shape the
nation’s future. For Christians, this is not just a civic duty; it is a sacred responsibility that
reflects our faith and values.
Voting is an act of stewardship, and our conduct during this time is a testimony of our
commitment to peace, justice, and righteousness. As we engage in this process, let us be
reminded that our ultimate hope lies not in human leaders but in God, who reigns supreme
over all nations.
The Call for Peace
The Bible reminds us in Romans 12:18, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at
peace with everyone.” This exhortation is particularly relevant during elections, a time often
fraught with tension, divisions, and heated rhetoric. As Christians, we are called to be
peacemakers, seeking to promote harmony rather than discord.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:9, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of
God.” Our actions during this election season should reflect this divine calling. Whether we are
engaging in discussions, sharing opinions, or even debating issues, let us do so with love,
respect, and a commitment to unity.
The Power of the Vote
Voting is not only a democratic right but also a God-given privilege to influence the direction of
our nation. Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the
wicked rule, the people groan.” This verse underscores the importance of choosing leaders
whose values align with righteousness, integrity, and justice.
As Christians, our votes should reflect the principles of the kingdom of God. We should
prayerfully discern which candidates demonstrate a heart for service, compassion for the
vulnerable, and a commitment to upholding the truth. Our choice should not be driven by tribal
affiliations, monetary gains, or temporary promises, but by a conviction to honour God in the
electoral process.
The Role of Prayer
Elections are a time to intensify our prayers for the nation. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 instructs us, “I urge,
then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all
people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and holiness.”
It is important that we pray for wisdom for voters, integrity for the Electoral Commission, and
peace throughout the election period. Pray also for the candidates, that those who are elected
will govern with humility, wisdom, and a heart to serve.
Practical Ways to Promote Peace
- Be an Ambassador of Peace: Avoid provocative language and refuse to engage in
arguments that could incite violence. Use your influence to calm tensions and foster
understanding. - Encourage Dialogue: Respect differing opinions and seek to understand others’
perspectives. Healthy dialogue can bridge gaps and reduce misunderstandings. - Avoid Spreading Misinformation: Be mindful of the information you share, especially
on social media. Verify facts before posting or forwarding messages. - Be Vigilant but Prayerful: Stay informed about the electoral process, but let your
responses be guided by faith, not fear.
Reflecting Christ During Elections
Our ultimate allegiance is to Christ, not a political party or candidate. While we participate in
the democratic process, we must remember that our hope is not in human leaders but in God,
who rules over all. Psalm 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
As ambassadors of Christ, let our conduct during this election season be a testimony of His love,
wisdom, and peace. Let us show the world that Christians are not only active citizens but also
agents of transformation, reconciliation, and hope.
Conclusion
This election is a defining moment for Ghana, but it is also an opportunity for Christians to shine
as lights in a world often overshadowed by division and strife. By voting with discernment,
promoting peace, and placing our trust in God, we can contribute to a process that honours
Him and strengthens our nation.
May Ghana’s elections be marked by peace, fairness, and unity. And may we, as Christians,
demonstrate through our actions and attitudes that we serve a God of justice, love, and order.
Let us remember: elections come and go, but the kingdom of God endures forever.
Stay Blessed!
