The Church Thyatira

SCRIPTURE: “He will rule them with an iron sceptre;  He will dash them to pieces like pottery-just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give him the morning star. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches”.
(Rev. 2: 27-29 NIV)

The word “sceptre” refers to a shepherd’s staff. Jesus will be not only King over all the nations but also their Shepherd. The use of iron sceptre indicates that not everyone will voluntarily submit to Jesus’ rule, but everyone will have to submit to it. At the end of Jesus’ earthly reign, those who submitted unwillingly will rebel. They will marshal themselves against Jesus but fall dead when He strikes them with a sharp sword.
The authority to rule the nations follows an order. The father grants it to Jesus, and in turn, Jesus grants it to His faithful followers. Christ is also called the morning star, (Rev. 22:16). A morning star appears just before dawn when the night is coldest and darkest. When the world is at its bleakest point, Christ will burst onto the scene, exposing evil with light bringing His promised reward.

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” – Hebrews 4 : 12 (NLT)

The Church In Thyatira

SCRIPTURE:” Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, (I will not impose any other burden on you): Only hold on to what you have until I come.To him who overcomes and  does my Will to the end, I will give authority over the nations.”(Rev. 2:24-26 NIV)

The “deep secret” of Satan were either false teachings advocated by heretics, or secret insights by so called believers “guaranteed” to promote deeper spiritual life. What was the appeal for such teaching? It may have been appealing to hear that what happens in the body is inconsequential; therefore, it is not sinful to fulfill your sexual desire outside marriage. Another appeal to the “deep secret”  may have been the sense of pride that such knowledge stimulated in those seeking it. As believers, we should hold tightly to the basics of our faith and view with extreme caution any new teaching that turns us away from the Bible, the fellowship of our church, or our basic confession of faith. Christ says that those who are victorious(those who remain faithful until the end and continue to please God) will rule over Christ’s enemies and reign with Him as He judges evil.

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” – Hebrews 4 : 12 (NLT)

AN ABUNDANT LIFE IS WAITING FOR US

Then He called the crowd to Him along with His disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. – Mark 8:34

INTRODUCTION
Jesus used the image of carrying a cross to illustrate the ultimate submission required of His followers. He is not against pleasure, nor was He saying that we should seek pain needlessly. Jesus was talking about the heroic effort needed to follow Him moment by moment, to do His will even when the work is difficult and the future looks bleak.
Nowhere in the Bible does God promise His followers an easy life. On the contrary, Jesus told. His followers expect trouble in this world. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”- John 16:33.

TAKING UP OUR CROSS TO FOLLOW JESUS
Each one of the disciples was executed for his faith, with the exception of John, who was exiled to the island of Patmos, and Judas, who died by suicide. These were the men who literally changed the face of the world by their willingness to follow Jesus and kick-start the great movement that would eventually become known as Christianity. And they all died. Badly.

And the suffering didn’t stop there. Paul, who took up the mantle of the first disciples, boasted of his sufferings for the Lord (2 Corinthians 11:16–33).
Consequently, throughout the ages, Christians have often embraced suffering as not only
necessary to live but also a sign of living the life God intended for them to live. And, no doubt, this is sometimes the case, as Jesus said it would be when He declared that whoever wanted to become His disciple would need to “deny themselves and take up their cross” and follow Him.

Countless Christians have interpreted their own trials and tribulations as forms of taking up
their crosses to follow Jesus, enduring whatever life throws their way for the sake of a faith that will be rewarded — perhaps not immediately but certainly eternally.
Peace, then, is not to be found in the circumstances of life but in God’s peace, which “surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7 ESV).

Life is suffering — brutal, unfair, and often very, very cruel and confusing. Yes, Jesus told us to expect suffering in this world, sometimes of the unimaginable variety.
But that is not all Jesus said.

In fact, in the very same verse where He promised that life will be hard, He also reminded us
that He has already overcome this world, a truth He not only articulated with words but also
manifested physically in His resurrection from the dead.

In life, there is suffering and death, but in God, there is healing and life. In John’s gospel, Jesus said this life is the very reason He came to earth. And not just any kind of life but one lived “abundantly”. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – John 10:10 (ESV).

What does that entail?
Well, probably a lot. God’s call on our lives is never singular. To live as God intends is to
necessarily experience life in all of its diversity. As the book of Ecclesiastes teaches,
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. —
Ecclesiastes 3:1

In other words, yes, the Christian life will necessarily call us to experience hardship and
sacrifice, but it should also involve abundance:
i. Abundant living is not driving a Range Rover. For some, abundant living is not being
plagued by panic attacks. For others, abundant living is not coping with our stress by
abusing alcohol.
ii. Abundant living is wanting to wake up with the sun instead of hiding out in bed.
iii. Thus, abundant living is doing the things that bring us joy and actually feeling that joy.
iv. Abundant living is loving and being loved by God.
v. That’s abundant living, and that’s what I believe all of us deserve because Jesus Christ
said we do.
vi. Abundant living means we also deserve the chance to walk through life not mired
forever in the deeper ditches of depression.

MHB 406 – MY GOD, I AM THINE
1 My God, I am Thine, what a comfort divine,
What a blessing to know that my Jesus is mine!
In the heavenly Lamb thrice happy I am,
And my heart it doth dance at the sound of His name.
2 True pleasures abound in the rapturous sound;
And whoever hath found it hath paradise found:
My Jesus to know, and feel His blood flow,
’Tis life everlasting, ’tis Heaven below.
3 Yet onward I haste to the heavenly feast:
That, that is the fulness; but this is the taste!
And this I shall prove, till with joy I remove
To the heaven of heavens in Jesus’ love.
Charles Wesley, 1707 – 1788

CONCLUSION

The Christian life boils down to this… Suffering, yes. Abundance, absolutely yes. We are loved
by God! He has an abundant life planned for us even when it includes difficulties and hardships.
Depression doesn’t have to be the end game for us.
Hope starts now.

The Church In Thyatira

SCRIPTURE: “Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching, she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds”.
(Rev. 2:20-23 NIV)

Jezebel, a pagan queen of Israel, was considered the evilest woman who ever lived. Her teaching misled many servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. Why is sexual immorality serious? Sex outside marriage always hurts. It hurts God because it shows that we prefer to satisfy our desire our own way instead of according to God’s Word. Sexual immorality has tremendous power to destroy families, churches, and communities because it destroys the integrity on which these relationships are built.  Eating food offered to idols could violate the conscience of weaker Christian brothers and sisters who would be bothered about it. Jezebel was obviously more concerned about her own selfish pleasure and freedom than the needs and concerns of fellow believers.

SCRIPTURE: “Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. Likewise you also have those hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent  therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.”  (Rev.2:14-16 NIV)

Balak was a king who feared the large number of  Israelites traveling through his country, so he hired Balaam to pronounce a curse on them. Balaam refused at first to do it, but an offer of money made him willing. Later Balaam influenced the Israelites to turn to idol worship. Here Christ rebuked the church for tolerating those who, like Balaam, lead people away from God.  There is room for differences of opinion among Christians in some areas, but there is no room for heresy and moral impunity.  As believers, we might not participate in idol feasts, but probably we involve ourselves in pornography, sexual sin, cheating, gossiping, and lying. Beloved, do not tolerate sin by bowing to the pressure to open-minded.

The Church In Smyrna.

SCRIPTURE:“To the angel of the  church Smyrna write: These are the words of Him who Is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. I know your afflictions and your  poverty-yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. ” (Rev.2 ” (Rev.2:8-9 NIV)

Jesus identifies Himself as the First and the last. This reflects His eternal existence.  Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made (John1:3 NIV). The church in Smyrna struggle against two hostile forces: A Jewish population strongly opposed to Christianity, and a non-Jewish population that was loyal to Rome and supported emperor worship. Persecution and suffering were inevitable in an environment like this. But are a synagogue of  Satan, means these Jews were serving Satan’s purposes, not God’s, when they gather to worship.

Christs’ Message To The Seven Churches, in Asia Minor

The Church In Ephesus.

SCRIPTURE:“Yet I hold this against you: You have forgotten your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come and remove your lampstand  from its place. But you have this in your favour:  You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” (Rev.2:4-7 NIV)

Over the long period of time, the church in Ephesus had steadfastly refused to tolerate sin among its members. This was not easy in a city noted for immoral sexual practices associated with the worship of the goddess Artemis. We also living in times of widespread sin and sexual immorality. It is popular to be opening toward many types of sin, calling them personal choices or alternative lifestyles. But when the body of believers begins to tolerate sin in the church,  it is lowering the standards and compromising the church witness.
Remember that God’s approval is infinitely more important than the world’s. Use God’s Word, not what people around you are willing to accept, to set the standards for what is right or wrong. Christ commended the church at  Ephesus for working hard, patiently enduring, not tolerating evil people, critically examining the claims of false apostles and suffering without quitting. Every church should have these characteristics.

Christs’ Message To The Seven Churches, in Asia Minor

Beloved in the Lord,
for the next two weeks we are going to cover, Christs’ Message To The Seven Churches, in Asia Minor, which is modern day Turkey. We will find these letters in Revelation 2 &3.

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!
Introduction to letters.

SCRIPTURE:Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.  The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are seven churches.” (Rev.1:19-20 NIV)

The letters to the seven churches reveal that many of the congregations throughout Asia had seriously strayed from the original New Testament standard of truth, faith and practice as taught by Jesus as well as those He personally authorized to establish His church and put His Word in writing.  It is likely that some in the churches were giving in to outside influences and were encouraging a policy of compromise with those who were pressuring and persecuting Christians. This attitude had to be corrected before it undermined and weakened the determination of Christians to stand strong for the truth in difficult times. John writes as directed by Christ to rebuke and correct the compromise and sin within the churches and to call them to repent – to turn from their own selfish and God-defying ways – and return to their first love: Jesus.
