The Role Of The Holy Spirit In The Life Of The Believer

Beloved in the Lord,

Today, our focus is on, The Holy Spirit Harvests The Fruit In Our Lives.

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!

SCRIPTURE: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatian 5:22-23 NIV)

These are not the fruit  of our own accomplishment; these fruits  are products of the Spirit’s  presences in our life.
The fruit of the Spirit is the spontaneous work of the Holy Spirit in us. The Spirit produces these character traits that are found in the nature of Christ. They are the by-products of Christ’s control. We can’t  obtain them by trying to get them without His help. If we want the fruit of the Spirit to grow in us, we must join our life to His.

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” – Hebrews 4 : 12 (NLT)

The Role Of The Holy Spirit In The Life Of The Believer

Beloved in the Lord,
Our message titled, The Role Of The Holy Spirit In The Life Of The Believer, is going to cover theentire week.
Today, our focus is on, The Holy Spirit Is a Gift-Giver

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!

SCRIPTURE: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in men.
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another  the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit.” (1Corinthians 12:4-8 NIV)

God is completely involved in the giving, using, and empowering of gifts, places of service, and activities vary, but they all have their best effects when they build up the body of Christ-the church. God creates a unique place in the body for every believer. Gifts and ministries may overlap, but each believer has a specialized, God-designed role.
Spiritual Gifts are individual and given by the Holy Spirit.

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.

SCRIPTURE: And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever.” (John 14:16 NIV)The Holy Spirit who Jesus said would abide with us forever is our comforter. He is here to be to us everything Jesus was to His disciples when  He was present with them. Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as our comforter, the word comforter, used in older translations of the Bible originally meant strengthen.

The Holy Spirit strengthens the weak, lifts up the fallen and gives the motivation in our lives as Christians. The Holy Spirit draws alongside us or close to us and encourages us to draw alongside or close to other people. The Holy Spirit, Jesus said, would be like He was, comforting to the distressed but sometimes distressing to the comfortable. The Holy Spirit is real and abiding friend who loves us, He will never abandon us in the midst of difficulty, but rather encourage, comfort and strengths us always.

The Role Of The Holy Spirit In The Life Of The Believer

Beloved in the Lord,
Our message titled, The Role Of The Holy Spirit In The Life Of The Believer, is going to cover theentire week.
Today, our focus is on, The Holy Spirit Is A  Revealer Of Truth.

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!

SCRIPTURE: But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will tell you what is yet to come.” (John 16:13 NIV)

Jesus said the Holy Spirit would tell them “about the future”  The nature of their mission, the opposition they would face, and the final outcome of their efforts. They did not fully understand these promises until the Holy Spirit came after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Then The Holy Spirit revealed truths to the disciples that they wrote down in the books that now form the New Testament.

The Holy Spirit is our spiritual guide revealing to our minds and hearts the truth as it relates to Scripture, to worship, to doctrine and to Christian living. As our Spiritual guide, the Holy Spirit goes before us to remove spiritual obstructions, spiritual roadblocks, while at the same time stays beside us to reveal the truth and to make all things plain and clear.
The Holy Spirit reveals the truth to us as we read, study and reflect on God’s word.

The Joy of Drawing Nearer To God,

Beloved in the Lord,
Our message for today is titled, The Joy of Drawing Nearer To God, it is based on Psalm 65:4

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!

SCRIPTURE: “Blessed are those you have  choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of Your house of Your holy Temple”. (Psalm 65:4 NIV).

One greatest joy is to be near God and enjoy communion with Him.
This is now possible for all believers through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. (Hebrews 10:10-22) and therefore the indwelling Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

The Bible exhorts us to draw near to God continually, that we must receive His mercy and strength to help us in our times of need (Hebrews 4:16, and 7:25). Our greatest shame would be to treat lightly this privilege of nearness with God, considering it to be unworthy of constant endeavors (Heb. 10:36-39).

God’s Mighty Power and Glory,

Beloved in the Lord,
Our message for today is titled, God’s Mighty Power and Glory,  it is based on Psalm 63:2

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!

SCRIPTURE: “I have seen you in the sanctuary, and beheld your power and glory”. (Psalm 63:2).

As children of God not only should we earnestly seek God’s presence in one personal life, but we should also long for His Spirit, power and glory to be manifested in His house. We should pray for God to assert Himself in power against satanic dominion and demonic oppression (Matthew 12:25; Mark 1:34-39), Sin (Romans 6) sickness and infirmities.(Matthew 4:23, Matt. 9:35, Acts 4:30, and Acts 8:7).
We should fervently desire that the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ might convict and save sinners (John 6:8-11, Acts 4:33, and sanctify them (John 17:17) and bring them into the fullness of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8; and Acts 2:4).

Resting In God’s Strength

Beloved in the Lord,
Our message for today is titled, Resting In God’s Strength, and it is based on Psalm 62:1

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!

SCRIPTURE: “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him”
(Psalm 62:1 NIV)

Psalm 62 expresses a foundational talk by which every Christian should live.
In times of trouble, suffering of opposition, we must depend on God as our refuge and rescuer.
Everyone who trusts in God should be able to say:

(i) I will not allow any trouble, crisis or suffering to shake my confidence in God- (Psalm 62:2-3). Not only does my salvation, my relationship with God come from Him but Jesus is my rock, my source of stability, the One who protect and shelters me from all storms of life (Ps. 62: 6-7)

(ii) In times of worry or threat, I will commit myself to Him and with truthfulness and honesty tell Him all that is in your heart as you read in (Phil.4:6-7)

(iii) I will wait patiently for the Lord to take action in His time and way, knowing He will respond with wisdom and compassion for my situation (Ps.62: 11-12).
God loves us and wants the best for us. Will we let Him have our hearts?

God’s Presence, The Best Place To Be

Beloved in the Lord,
Our message for today is titled, God’s Presence, and it is based on Psalm 65:4a.

May the Holy Spirit minister deeply into our hearts, the message He has for us today.
Enjoy!

SCRIPTURE: “Blessed are those who You choose and bring near to live in Your courts!” (Psalm 65:4a)

One greatest joy should be to sense God’s presence and to enjoy personal interaction and companionship with Him. This is possible for all who accept the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for our sins as we read in Hebrews 10:10-22.
We can continually experience God’s presence though His Holy Spirit who lived in and through those who have accepted Christ’s forgiveness and entrusted Him with the leadership to their lives (1 Cor. 6:19, 2 Cor.1:22, 1 John 3:24, 1 John 4:13)
The Bible challenges us to come near to God continually, that we might receive His mercy and strength to help us in our times of need. (Heb.  4:16; 7:25)
What a shame to take this privilege for granted as to neglect God’s presence, as if He were not wealthy of constant attention.(Heb. 10:36-39).
Let us fill our hearts with the joy of knowing that we are loved infinitely and eternally.

PARENTING: CHRISTIAN MOTHERHOOD

O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104:24.

INTRODUCTION

God is so wonderful and as we look around us daily we cannot help being filled with awe.  Creation is filled with stunning variety, revealing our loving God’s rich creativity goodness and wisdom.  It is in this love, goodness and wisdom that God has called us to participate with Him in His creative works through procreation.  A fresh look at the people you see everyday at home and in the work place tells you how uniquely God has made each of them – each with his/her own special beauty, special talents, abilities and gifts.

It is with the thought of God’s awesome wisdom and love that we want to focus on parenting with special emphasis on Motherhood.  Christian motherhood is a Motherhood centred on Jesus Christ and His revelation to us of God.

The Bible speaks of God and the Church as a mother. – Is 66:13As a mother comforts her child so will I comfort you.  Again in Isaiah 66:10-11 “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her; rejoice with her in joy, all you who mourn over her- that you may nurse and be satisfied from her consoling breast; that you may drink deeply with delight from her glorious bosom.   Gal 4:26 also says, “But the other woman corresponds to the Jerusalem above; she is free and she is our mother”.

PERSPECTIVE

Motherhood is not just producing children but rather a continuous loving and nurturing relationship.  It involves loving, comforting, protecting, training in values, disciplining, encouraging and building up- Eph6: 4; Col. 3:21.   This is why parenting cannot be successfully accomplished by any human being except that person is enabled by God in Christ through the power of His Holy Spirit.  It is God alone who is the perfect parent and He alone can impart this perfection to us.

CHRISTIAN MOTHERHOOD

Our God is so gracious and loving to women- we are so special to Him that it is in us that He has decided to work His greatest miracle – the making life with a clot of blood- Ps. 139:13-15- skilfully forming it as He did at creation with dust.  Women are greatly blessed and are God’s partners in creating other human beings

God has always used women to bring His great servants into the world – Isaac, Jacob, Joseph – Moses, Deborah Samson, Ruth, David to mention a few in the Old Testament.  But most importantly, salvation has come through a woman – Mary, Mother of Jesus.  Through women have come LIFE, TRUTH, LIGHT and POWER, because of Jesus Christ.

MOTHERHOOD

The most important roles for a mother are to love and care for her family – that is the Christian perspective.  God, through mothers, establishes human beings in the world and through mothers God wants to impart values that bring glory to His name.

DUTIES OF A MOTHER

  1. Love

Pregnancy from God’s perspective is rooted in love.  God expects pregnancy to come through the union of marriage where two people are made one in love.  Pregnancy then is God’s gift.  Too much is going wrong because a number of pregnancies come about through sinful relationships.  This is why it is important to stress that as far as God is concerned, love should be the key point in pregnancy.  Thus:

  1. A mother’s love starts at the point of pregnancy – her body provides shelter, nourishment and emotions.  An unhappy, dissatisfied pregnant woman deeply affects the foetus and the child comes out with emotional problems.
    1. Love continues after birth as a duty because the child totally depends on the mother for everything.

Women cannot give what they don’t have and therefore fathers must remember God’s instruction to love their wives – Eph. 5:25&28-29.  This is important during pregnancy and after birth.

It was compassion that made the mother of the child in dispute during King Solomon’s reign decide to give up the child as we read in 2 Kings 3:26.  The one who stole the child had no love and therefore was willing to have him cut into two.

  • Comforting and Caring For Them

In Ruth 4:16 we read about Naomi who was a caring mother.  How often children run to their mothers when they are bullied or get hurt!! Hannah, the mother of Samuel in 1 Samuel 1:22-27 is one caring woman.  We therefore should be there for them just as God is for us Isa. 66:13- As a mother comforts her child so will I comfort you.

3. Protection

Jochebed, Moses’ mother, is one of the best examples of mothers protecting their children – Exodus 2:1-4.    She caught a glimpse of God’s intentions and realised that Moses was God’s special person so she defied the Pharaoh’s order and protected him – Do we discern God’s plan for our children and therefore protect them?  God has a plan for every body’s life.  As mothers we are to cooperate with God so that our children can grow up fulfilling God’s plan for their lives.

4. Education

Education in parenting denotes teaching the child wisdom, which from God’s perspective means the fear of God and living in obedience of Him.  Proverbs 31:1 tells us that what King Lemuel wrote was what his mother taught Him.  Mothers are the first point of education for their children.  We are to have the inner beauty of women who have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus.  This is what enables us to have the quite gentle spirit that t he Apostle Peter speaks about in 1Pet 3:4. The Bible also tells us that we are to bear the fruit of the spirit – Gal. 5:22-23 and gain wisdom from above – James 3:17.  Most of us are often rude – shouting, insulting, disrespectful- giving the child no dignity, cursing and giving them bad examples. By so doing we virtually give our children over to the devil.

We should speak with wisdom and have faithful instructions on our tonguesProverbs 31:26. We should be vessels of honour used by the Holy Spirit so that we can bring up the children the way they should go.  Timothy was well educated by his mother – 2 Timothy 1:5.

  • Watch over children’s affairs

We are to cooperate with God and provide guidance for our children and not walk ahead of God as Rebekah did in Genesis 27:6-10, thus creating grave problems between her children and generations after them.  Rather we should be like Hannah who took care of Samuel.  She nurtured him and weaned him before sending him to the house of God under the care of Eli.  Later she sent him clothes and other things to support his upkeep and demonstrate her love.

OUR GREAT MODEL

Mary, mother of Jesus is a good model for us.  She exhibited good motherly qualities.  She was:

  • Spiritual – God spoke to her through Gabriel – Luke 1:46
  • Submissive – She totally submitted to the will of God – Luke 1:38. HumbleLuke 2:19,39

·         Loving, Gentle, Caring

  • Woman of Faith – Believed in Jesus her own son as the Messiah

Precious Mothers, let us allow God to have His way in our lives

WHAT TO DO

The Bible clearly teaches us that apart form Jesus we can do nothing- John 15:5.   Let us therefore accept Jesus as personal Saviour and Lord so that by the help of His Holy Spirit who indwells us we will:

  • Grow in faith.
  • Live the word in obedience, bear spiritual fruit and live as practical Christian.
  • Be faithful stewards, using all our talents, gifts treasures and times to God’s glory
  •  Discipline our children in love – Heb 12:7- 10.
  • Proverbs has much to teach us. For e.g., Prov. 13:24 – those who spare the rod hate their children, but those who love them are diligent to discipline them. The Rod of correction also imparts wisdom– Prov 29:15.
  • Teach our children to put their faith in Jesus Christ, for He alone is Lord – Acts 4:12

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY!!!

HONOURING OUR MOTHERS (PART I)

“Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” – Exodus 20:12 (NIV)

Introduction

As we know, the second Sunday in every May is designated as Mother’s Day.  This is not because there is a biblical direction for honouring our mothers but it has become the custom of the world.  Mothers are so important that, we are going to spend the next two weeks reflecting on how God sees women and how we, mothers, women and daughters should see ourselves.  Our prayer is that our men – boys, fathers, brothers, nephews, uncles and grandfathers will see us with the same lenses God sees us.

The Origin of Mother’s Day

Anna Jarvis is known as the “Mother of Mother’s Day,” for her long crusade to see the occasion adopted as such.  Her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, a campaigner and a peace activist was a Sunday school teacher who charged her Sunday school class about mothers in the Bible and spent much of her time caring for wounded soldiers on both sides of the civil war.  She organized in the late 1800s “Mothers Day Work Club” which tackled public health issues. Ann Reeves Jarvis prayer was that someone one day will find a memorial mother’s day commemorating her for the matchless service she rendered to humanity in every field of life.  After her death, her daughter, Ann Jarvis vowed to push for a national day to commemorate Mothers and arraigned for white carnations to be handed to mothers in the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia where her mother was a Sunday school teacher.  Ann Jarvis was however, a bit irked and bothered when she saw that President Woodrow Wilson had gotten the credit of establishing Mother’s Day.

Our day is often characterized among many with a glaring and obvious disrespect for age, the past, parents, and authority. We could wish Mother’s Day might be a day of real significance in learning more perfectly the will of the Lord regarding respect for parents. Proverbs 30:11 states There are those who curse their father, and do not bless their mother.” – NIV.  This could be said of many in our time too.

Influence of Women in the Bible

Mothers are very important in God’s agenda so believe it or not they are mentioned 226 times in the Bible. The first mother, Eve, was called the “mother of all living” – Gen. 3:20.  Sarah, the wife of Abraham, was called the “mother of nations” – Gen. 17:16.  Moses’ mother gave her own child away to an Egyptian princess just to spare his life.  Samuel’s mother dedicated her son to the Lord at a very young age.  King Solomon reminded young -people in Proverbs 4 not to forsake the law of their mother.  Young Timothy’s leadership was based on the prayers of his faithful mother Eunice and grandmother Lois.

Meaning of Honouring Mother

Honouring of motherhood is not of man, but of God. We honor mothers, not because of a Congressional resolution, but because of a divine teaching. We honour mothers, not just one day of the year, but throughout the year. In ancient times, as today, motherhood was considered a great and special blessing. God commanded through Moses, Honor thy father and thy mother….” – Exodus 20:12. The same teaching is in the New Testament in Ephesians 6:2-3 – “Honour your father and your mother” – which is the first commandment with a promise – “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Honouring our mother may include paying her a visit, giving her a gift, sending her a card, making a telephone call to her, writing her a letter, even wearing a special flower to commemorate her birthday. All these things are nice. But there are much, much more things of deeper significance. To honour means to regard and treat with great respect and esteem. The very definition includes both the heart and the manifestation of the attitude in the heart.

This would include the way we speak to her and of her. While many may consider it old fashioned, but referring to mother by her first name seems to place her on the level no different from any other. But mothers are on a level that demands more consideration, special consideration, than other relationships. Our address of her should reflect this unique relationship and her rank and position. It is a serious mistake to speak of her as “the old woman” because many use that terminology to convey disrespect. There is no more warm and beautiful term than to simply call her, Mother, Maa, Maame or similar words that denote she is in a special place in the heart and life.  Mothers are parents and they deserve recognition that they are not just another among others people.

Why Does God Want us to Honour our Mothers?

God knows that when we honour and love our mothers, everyone wins.  God wins, our mothers win and we also win. Proverbs 10:1 teaches that when we foolishly do not honour our mothers, we bring grief to them.  Many mothers literally die of broken hearts because of the selfishness and waywardness of their adult children.  The Bible teaches that there is a spiritual law of reaping and sowing.  As the famous movie “Gone With the Wind” reminds us, the person who brings trouble on his family will only inherit the wind – Proverbs 11:29.  Honouring our mothers is in our own best interests.

It is very easy to focus on our parent’s flaws.  Proverbs 15:20 says “A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.” Have you ever noticed the number of interesting swear-words that involve the use of the term ‘mother’?  There is so much anger and hatred in our culture towards the feminine gender.   Proverbs 30:17 symbolically says that those who dishonour their mothers will have their eyes pecked out by the ravens and vultures.  To fail to honour our mothers is to reject motherhood to go blind to the things that really matter in life.  Honouring our mothers is not a multiple-choice option.

To be continued!

Stay Blessed!
