SPIRIT OF TRUTH

SCRIPTURE TEXT: “When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”—John 16:13

We have to admit that the truth is hard to handle without help. But Jesus helps by providing a helper, the Spirit of truth.

Jesus was preparing to leave his disciples and return to his Father, and his disciples were afraid. They imagined themselves spending much time with Jesus, learning about his kingdom and finding their places in it. The truth they could not handle was that Jesus had to leave them. Their lives had to transition from the God they could see to the God who would be in them.

But Jesus gave them truth they could handle. The Spirit of God would remind them of the truth of Jesus as the only Savior whom they—and we—will ever need. The Spirit takes us by the hand and helps us to live into the words and actions of the Father and the Son. We can handle that truth!

Has the Spirit been speaking to you this week? Are you taking his counsel to heart? Let the Spirit lead you and guide you every step of the way!

PRAYER: “Holy Spirit, I need your guidance to take in the truth of God’s Word. Help me as I receive the truth of Jesus as the very words of life.” Amen.

GIVEN BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

SCRIPTURE TEXT: “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. ” – John 3:5

God’s grace doesn’t just “happen” to come to us. It comes to us from God the Father through the obedience, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And the saving work of Jesus comes to us through the Holy Spirit.

The Bible teaches that we all share the stain of Adam’s sin. From the moment we are conceived in our mother’s womb, we are in rebellion against God. Our rebellion, though rooted and connected to Adam’s first sin, includes our own inescapable inclination to sin. Our hearts are hardened against God: we have plugs in our ears and blinders over our eyes. On our own, we are hopelessly lost.

But the Holy Spirit comes to us and changes our hearts.

The Holy Spirit’s work in our hearts is sometimes overlooked or downplayed. Through the sometimes dramatic though often mundane events of our lives, the Spirit woos us, draws us to him, and moves us toward the love of our Father in heaven. And when—and only when—the Holy Spirit has softened our hearts, unstopping our ears and removing the blinders from our eyes, do we turn to God.

We are saved by grace alone through the power and work of the Holy Spirit. Be aware of the Spirit working in your life today, filling you with grace and flowing to those around you.

PRAYER: “Creator Spirit, you laid the world’s foundations, and you set us free to live in God’s love and mercy. Make us your sacred temples to live and serve and glorify our Father”. Amen.

WITNESSING IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

SCRIPTURE TEXT: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” – Acts 1:8

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are nowhere more relevant to our lives than in the area of witness.  The Holy Spirit not only gives us the power to speak, but through His gifts of wisdom and discernment He shows us when and how to speak in any particular situation.  We all live under the shadow of the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations, but we are not left to ourselves in this task.  Jesus promised His first disciples that He would always be with them and He is always with us, giving us power and guidance through the Spirit whom He has sent, to enable us every day in our witness for Him.

The Holy Spirit leads men and women into areas of effective witness.  He is always taking the initiative in opening the right doors where He has prepared the ground for the reception of the gospel – e.g. Acts 8:26-39.  Life takes on a new dimension altogether when we are prepared every day to follow the leading of the Spirit on every occasion.  The Holy Spirit will prepare the hearts and lives of those with whom we come into contact, so that they can receive the witness we give them to the power of Jesus.

Our whole life is an opportunity and if we will open ourselves to the possibilities of the Holy Spirit, we will be surprised at how many opportunities we will be given to share what our faith in Jesus means to us.  This does not mean that we will always need to be straining to barge into people’s lives: it means that we need to follow the Lord as He opens the door by His Spirit.

Witness means many things.  At one time it will mean making a clear statement about what we believe and why we believe it; on other occasions it will mean that we are the outlet for God in that situation, demonstrating His love and power through our attitudes and concern for other people.  In any event, it is not a witness to ourselves, but to the loving power of the Lord Jesus Christ

PRAYER: Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in every situation.
