APPRECIATE LIFE

“I will sacrifice a thank offering to You and call on the name of the Lord.” – Psalm 116:17

Do you appreciate the love and support of your family? Can you still marvel at the rising of the sun? Can you still laugh about a funny situation, or do you find it hard to believe that humour is one of God’s gift to you?
Don’t let your enthusiasm for life wane! Enjoying and appreciating the beauty of life must be an integral part of your life.
If you put God at the centre of your life and thoughts, you will discover that, by appreciating your life, you continually move closer to Him, the Source of all real life.

Father, I appreciate all the beauty and joy that fills my life and that You have so freely bestowed on me. Amen.

SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR

“Before long, the world will not see Me anymore, but you will see Me. Because I live, you also will live” – John 14:19.

Many people harbor anxiety because the future is unknown to them, and become pessimistic and discouraged. We must constantly remind ourselves that life is extremely precious, so that we don’t fall into the trap of depression.

Even if the future seems bleak, you can be assured that your life and future are in God’s hands. God is in control of everything. There is joy in Christ because He is the Rock on which you can build your life. His grace is sufficient to get you through each day.

Seize this life and live it in the abundance of Jesus Christ your Lord and Saviour.

Prayer: Through all the changing circumstances of life, Lord, in joy as well as sorrow, my heart will sing Your praises and thank You for the abundant life that You have made possible for me. Amen.

A NEW YEAR; A NEW WAY; THE SAME GOD!

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you” – Psalm 32:8.

When we reflect on the future, we often allow the events of the past – problems and disappointments – to cloud our vision.

Today, more so than ever before, the moment has come to place your unwavering trust in the omniscience of God. He truly cares about you and loves you deeply.

Everyone has a need for love: true, profound, sincere love. So rediscover that, in this seemingly loveless world, there is Somebody who has special interest in you: a God in heaven who is Love and who loves you dearly.

DEALING WITH SIN

Matthew 18:8-9 provides an important insight into how to deal with sin,

“If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.”

The eye represents the thought life, where sin is conceived. The hand represents that sin actually being carried out. And the foot is where it becomes a walk, a pattern, an entrenched habit of life, a sinful lifestyle.

When Jesus says, “Cut it off,” He is speaking of ruthless self-judgment. And He didn’t stop there. He said, “Cut it off and cast it from you.” In other words, get as far away from the source of your sin as you can.

I remember one day I walked right into a spider web. As I did, I caught a glimpse of this huge orange-colored spider out of the corner of my eye. As I hit the web, I felt it get on my neck. I started doing a war dance, hitting myself and ripping my shirt off, trying to get that thing off me.

And you know what? The moment a sinful thought lands in your mind, you ought to do the same thing, go on the warpath! Start batting that thing away! Start quoting Scriptures.

TURN TO THE BIBLE

‘I will not break my agreement nor change what I have said.’
Psalm 89:34 NCV

Sometimes we can find ourselves waking up in a cloud of gloom. Nothing in our day goes right, and we can’t seem to feel positive. We don’t want to do the things we have to do, in fact we’d rather just stay under our duvets all day, or just escape the pressures of life by jetting off to another country. But geographical cures don’t work. Escaping doesn’t solve the problem; it just relocates it.

Instead, we need to be turning to a source of strength, hope, and encouragement that never fails – the Bible. God says, ‘I will not break my agreement nor change what I have said.’ What we read in the Bible is truth. It’s God’s promises to us that will never fail. It’s full of verses that we can use to help us focus on God rather than how we’re feeling.

Here are some examples: ‘When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me. (Psalm 86:7 NIV); ‘He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions’ (Psalm 107:20 NKJV). ‘I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living’ (Psalm 27:13 NIV); ‘I will go in the strength of the Lord God’ (Psalm 71:16 NKJV); ‘Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken’ (Psalm 55:22 NIV); ‘Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you’ (1 Peter 5:7 NIV). When we let Scriptures like these fill our minds and our hearts, we can remember our identity in Christ, that we have a God who is there for us every step of the way, and that we have better days to come.

What Now?
Choose a Bible verse from the list in the reading. Memorise it. Write it out. Design it up. Then go back to it every time you’re feeling down.
