SALT AND LIGHT

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot” – Matthew 5:13(NIV).
Both Salt and Light are forces that change an alien environment permanently. Salt enhances flavor and preserves or slows decay only if the salt itself stays pure. Sodium chloride is a stable compound and cannot lose its saltiness but it can lose its effectiveness by being diluted. This point is the application for Christians. Light symbolises purity and divine revelation. If Christians are only showing the decay, our mission would seem rather bleak but we are also to be beacons of light to those who will respond.

If a seasoning has no flavor, it has no value. If Christians make no effort to affect the world around us, we are of little value to God. If we are too much like the world, we are worthless. Christians should not blend in with everyone else, instead we should affect others positively just as seasoning brings out the best flavor in food.

If we live for Christ, we will glow like lights showing others what Christ is like. We hide our light by

  • Being quiet when we should speak;
  • Going along with the crowd;
  • Denying the light;
  • Letting sin dim our light
  • Not explaining our light to others; or
  • Ignoring the needs of others.

Be a beacon of truth – do not shut your light off from the rest of the world.
