“Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” – Luke 6:9
Many Christians interpret the fourth of the ten commandments – keep the Sabbath day Holy – to mean that we should go to church.
Now while going to church is a good and necessary part of Christianity, it is not the totality of the fulfillment of God’s will. Neither is it a license to behave badly for the rest of the week.
But unfortunately many of us Christians treat people badly from Monday to Saturday…and sometimes on Sunday. We steal from taxpayers by consistently failing to work the full 40 hour week, we pollute God’s earth with poorly disposed of trash, and then we proceed to church on Sunday in the name of “keeping the Sabbath day holy”
What we fail to realize is that doing good, being honest, and treating people right every day including Sunday is the best way to truly practice our religion and fulfill the will of God.
Visiting a sick friend, mentoring a young person, actually doing the job for which we signed a contract, fulfilling our promises…that’s how we act like Jesus.
Let us remember that “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you” James 1:27
Dear God, I know I cannot fool You by living a life that is unworthy of You and then pretending on Sunday to be a good person by worshipping You. Remind me always that service to others every day of the week is service to You. In your Son’s name, Amen.
